What GLP-1 is
Glucagon-like peptide-1 is a hormone released by L-cells in the lining of your small intestine and colon when food arrives. It is not a diet concept. It is a signalling molecule that has been running your appetite your entire life.
It does four things:
- Triggers insulin, but only when needed. It tells the pancreas to release insulin when blood glucose is actually elevated. Self-regulating, so it does not drive you into a crash.
- Slows gastric emptying. Food leaves the stomach more slowly. You stay full longer on less.
- Speaks to the brain. GLP-1 receptors in the hypothalamus and reward centres reduce hunger and quiet food preoccupation.
- Suppresses glucagon. It blocks the signal that dumps stored sugar into your bloodstream, so glucose stays steady.
Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound are GLP-1 receptor agonists — molecules that bind the same receptor and hold on far longer than the natural hormone does. The results are real. So is the cost, the side-effect profile, and what happens when people stop.
The question is not whether GLP-1 works. It is whether you want to rent it or build it.
The four food triggers
1. Fermentable fiber — the strongest lever most people ignore
Your L-cells are concentrated in the lower gut. Most food is absorbed before it gets there. Fermentable fiber is not — it travels intact to the colon, where gut bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids, primarily butyrate and propionate. Those short-chain fatty acids directly stimulate L-cells to release GLP-1.
This is a delayed, sustained release, and it is why fiber outperforms almost everything else for appetite control hours after the meal.

2. Protein — the fastest and most potent per gram
Protein produces the strongest acute GLP-1 response of any macronutrient. Amino acids — particularly glutamine, and the branched-chain aminos — stimulate L-cells directly on contact. The response begins within about fifteen minutes of eating.
Whey and casein are the most studied. Fish, eggs, and poultry perform strongly. The practical threshold is around 30 grams in a sitting; below that, the signal is weak.

3. Monounsaturated fat — the one that makes it last
Fat is the slowest trigger and the longest-acting. Monounsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic acid from olive oil, stimulate GLP-1 release and extend it well past the meal. Olive oil outperforms butter in head-to-head comparisons on this measure.
This is the answer to the question "why am I hungry an hour after eating." A meal with adequate fat does not do that.

4. Anti-inflammatory foods — protecting the factory
The first three triggers assume your L-cells are working. Omega-3 fatty acids and polyphenols reduce that inflammatory load and improve L-cell function.

What suppresses your natural GLP-1

Common questions
Can food really replace Ozempic?
No, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. Pharmaceutical GLP-1 agonists produce receptor activity many times higher than food does, and for some people that is medically appropriate. What food does is restore and sustain your own production — which is what determines whether results hold, whether you are on a medication, coming off one, or never taking one.
How long before I notice a difference?
The acute response is immediate — you will feel a properly built meal within the first hour. The microbiome shift that drives fiber-based GLP-1 takes longer; research on fiber interventions typically shows meaningful change in two to four weeks of consistency.
What is the single best food for GLP-1?
